DIY Make your own Collar

Here's how to make a super cute detachable peter pan collar. You can make it in most fabrics (I've done cotton, lace and fur) and decorate it however you want. Any questions or if I haven't explained something properly just ask.

You will need;

  • Ribbon, any width you like and about 90cms.
  • 2 pieces of Fabric at least 40cm x 25cm each. They don't have to be the same.
  • Pattern Piece which you can print off here. Download it and print it off on A4 paper. Mine looks different because it's my original draft.
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Either a needle or a sewing machine. I use a sewing machine.

Do this for both pieces of fabric. Cut your ribbon into 2 equal halves. If you are sewing buttons or attaching studs or anything else to your collar, do that now.

This is so they don't get tangled or stuck in the seams when you sew them in.

Pin the top collar and the bottom collar together with the right sides together and the wrong side facing outwards. Slide the two ribbons in where the arrows are making sure they aren't touching the edges and pin them in place too. Make sure the ends are poking out a little bit.

Turn the collar the right way out.

Stitch the gap closed. Press it flat with an iron. Unpin the ribbons. Your collar is finished!

You can see me wearing mine here.

This is fun, particularly if you want to decorate the collar with something that would not wash well. Clever idea.

@annabellouis I never thought of that! Oh I'm going to think of un-washable things to attach now...
